Monday is Craft Day! Tuesday is Game Day! Bring a game to share. Wednesday is PJ, Movie, and Ice Cream Day! 2022- 2023 Farewell Statement This year has been one for the books. So many new friends and great memories have been made. Our playdates were awesome but this year I have to say the growth I have seen in these Explorers has just been awe inspiring. I am so proud of them and nearly cried build their portfolios and seeing their growth. Your children have left a mark on my heart and I hope they will remember me for years to come. Each Explorer received a homemade keychain with their name, our logo, and a reminder that I hope they carry with them throughout their educational journey: Once an Explorer, Always an Explorer. Being an Explorer is something not everyone can claim but those who can take pride in it. Nothing in life can keep an Explorer from accomplishing their goals. Sometimes the path is hard to see but Explorers will always find a way and do it with kindness and helpfulness. Thank you all for this year and sharing your child with me. I hope you have a fabulous and safe summer! Special thank you to all the volunteers and to our room parents Alicia, Patti, and Meredith. You all have stepped up and helped make so much magic happen. Wishing you well, Ms. Erica Summer Packet Link! https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aP3fyzKd9o9ZJQRhlWVi8fw3waA5ZfEy?usp=share_link |

SASC CARNIVAL SUCCESS!
Greetings! We, your PTSO, would like to thank all of you who attended this year’s carnival! Even though that sun was brutal, we were thankful for the great weather and hope all of you had a great time and did not overheat! This was a very successful event and we owe it all to you. Our sponsors were generous, our volunteers were wonderful, our attendees were great, and our band was superb! With all of the many happenings going on at the carnival, we did have one minor inconvenience. At our silent auction table, one of our prizes went missing. We are doing our due diligence and making an attempt to find the missing item. A picture has been attached for reference. If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of this item, we would greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter. Please email [email protected] if you have any information. We are in the process of reviewing the property video tapes eager to understand what happened, but we are hoping that this does not require any further action. We are not going to let this unfortunate event dampen our spirits. We truly are grateful for all that we experienced this past Saturday. We really do have a wonderful school family. We are tallying up all of our proceeds and will report on everything soon. All in all, we are very confident that we have met our goal to send three teachers to training over the summer. So again, THANK YOU!! Wishing you well, WINGS PTSO Exec Board SAFEKEEPER APPRECIATION WEEK!

In Phoenix folders this week they will be bringing home their Gus the Plus personal poster that they completed using the classroom poster. We will teach Linus the Minus in the next topic. First Graders are learning about subtracting numbers through 20. They are using ten frames to show subtracting the subtrahend from the minuend leaving the difference. |

AGAs New Math Homework Completed work Playdate Flyer Calendar of Events: American History Showcase 2/17 @11 Celebrations Eve will be turning 6 next week! We are 9 school days from the 100th day of school! This week Ms. Jasmine focused on Now and Then for theme this week. Your Explorer may love to check out some of your "old" stuff. This weekend you can find things from when you were a child and share and compare it to the things your Explores play with. This might be a video game (the original Mario to Mario Galaxy, huge difference), flip cell phones to smart phones, or even fashion trends from your youth (I hear those 90's styles are coming back in). Math First Graders are starting a topic on subtraction while Kindergartners are getting introduced to addition. The approximate next test date for First graders is January 30th. The approximate next test date for Kindergarteners is January 26th. For Kindergarten we worked on lesson 6-3 today and it was tricky for most. I highly suggested working on the homework assignment for 6-3. We will continue the skill of adding on a number line in class too. |

We are glad to have your Explorers back with us.
We received many sight word packets back. Way to go getting them done! If you have not completed them yet no worries. Keep working on them. Recognizing these words by sight helps kids become faster, more fluent readers. Many sight words are tricky to read and spell — they aren't spelled the way they sound. So practicing them will help your Explorer with reading and writing. I am attaching the first 300 sight words list. If you Explorer has mastered one list try the next.
Kindergarten Math test will be Tuesday. We will take our Practice test Monday. I am including a copy of the practice test below if you want to check it out. a reminder that we complete and send home their practice test the day before their math test. This give you an opportunity to see how prepared your Explorer is before their math test. We review it in class and always suggest they practice it with you at home that night too.
First grade is about a week out from their Math test. We will update you as their test date approaches.
Our new Theme (Social Studies unit) is America History.

Tome is a writing assignment meant to keep your Explorer engaged over the break. Instructions can be found on the back of your child's personal Turkey Tom. Tom is meant to go on adventures with your child over the break. You can document these adventures with photos and send them back with your child after the break with some writing to tell about their fun together. A writing paper was included with the targets in the top right corner. These are the targets we strive for all year long. Feel free to use them as a guide as you help your Explorer tell about their break. We are so excited to see what your Explorer and Tom will do together. Leveled Readers We have sent home leveled readers with each Explorer with guiding questions for you to engage you scholar with as they work to read through the text. We also included comprehension questions if you want to check in to see what your child's understanding of the text. |

Please be mindful that we have many students, and many conferences to complete. We are excited to meet with you! www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E44AEAF29A7FDC61-endoffirst Fall Festival! Welcome back to Fall Festival! This is truly a school tradition that has been missed. For our Fall Festival We will have 5 or 6 stations setup in the classroom and a few more in that hall way that are run by volunteers. All activities center around the fall season. There will be paint, glue, bead, and so much more. Students may dress up for the event or not. It is up to you and your child. If they choose to dress up be aware that this before Halloween and there is paint in some of our activities. Costumes and outfits might get a little messy. The school rules for Fall Festival costumes are that students may not wear masks, bring accessories, or wear anything scary/gory. We also ask that all students bring a change of clothes to change into after the event as costumes can be uncomfortable and can get damaged at recess. Remember the change of clothes we already have on campus are back up clothes for accidents and should not be used for Fall Festival. Let us know if you have any questions. Want to volunteer and all the Explorer spots are full? Send me an email and I can likely make it happen. Since our centers are parent run a few extra hands are always welcome. Can’t come but want to donate? Check out the link below! Anything extra will be repurposed for other events or crafts. Login information for Headsprout Login information for MobyMax Calendar of Events: October 17th - NO SCHOOL - Teacher Planning October 28th- Elementary Fall Dance- Information in the PTSO Corner section of the newsletter What is Headsprout? Headsprout is from the same company, Reading A-Z, that we use for our leveled readers and levels we use for our Academic Growth Analysis (progress report). This helps keep continuity between what we teach and their computer learning time. One of the best parts of Headsprout is that is assess your child and guides their computer experience to what they need to grow in, just like we do in our reading groups. The program also allows for online access to leveled readers for your child to practice with you. Our goal in class is for every child to use this program twice a week at school. Sight word of the week: and Reading groups have started! All Explorers have been started into their reading groups. We are focusing on vowels this week. We are working on identifying, writing, and make the sound of the vowels. This skill will be helpful with reading as well as writing. Below find sound drills for the whole alphabet. We worked on A,E,I,O,U. We also do them a bit more enthusiastically than this person. We present them as letter name, picture name, short sound. A, apple, ă E, Ed, ĕ I, itch, ĭ, O, octopus, ŏ U, up, ŭ. This week we also have started our math and writing blocks. Artists (kindergarteners) are working on Topic 1: Numbers 0 to 5 and Scientists (first graders) are working on Topic 13: Identifying and Analyzing 2D and 3D Shapes. Homework will be coming home this week. This year we will be sending home the whole topic worth of homework with an approximate assessment date on it. This day is also there as a "complete before this date" for the homework. Assessment days are approximate because sometimes we may notice students need an extra day or two to review a concept before being assessed on it or we may notice they have got the skills and moved more quickly though the information. Do not be afraid to email and ask us for help. The way math is presented now may not be how you were taught. We will always do our best to provide a clear breakdown for you so you can help your child.

The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) is a progress monitoring tool that will be administered three times per year to track your student’s progress in learning the Benchmarks of Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) standards throughout this school year. Scholars are assessed on grade level standards for the entire year each time they take it. The goal is for your scholar's score to grow as the school year progresses, with a Level 3 as the goal for the end of the year. Your scholar's Individual Reports for the first progress monitoring session were sent home in your scholar's folder today. This report does not need to be signed and returned despite the line for you to sign. You may keep this paper. This week we focused a lot of time on diving into Explorer questions. Someone brought up germs and we took a look at the components of blood and talked about the jobs each part of our blood does. Explorers loved learning about the white blood cells and how they work in our body to keep us safe. We also focused on hand washing best practices.
We also took a walk down the teachers' memory lane as we discussed some older terms like "hang up the phone", "roll up the window" and even learned what tolls were. The teachers were clearly showing their age as they tried to play the toll game only to find out very few knew what a toll was. This week we read Shubert Sees the Best and learned about loving eyes. Loving eyes allow for us to use positive intent when we view others oopses. The Explorers got to make a set of heart shape glasses to match Shubert's loving eyes. Later in the week we read David Goes to School and stoped on each page to put on our loving eyes and give positive intent to David's actions. The Explorers loved this activity and really rocked it! |

If you are not recieving emails from the SASC adminstration be sure to reach out to [email protected] to make sure your correct email is on file with them. Message from Administration: Dear Phoenix Families, This morning, SASC completed a fire and lock-down drill. In order to maintain a safe environment for our students and staff, it is important to practice our emergency and crisis response plans by having drills designed to exercise our procedures. The lock-down drill allows us to practice how we would respond in the event that the school experienced a threat or situation that could put students or staff at risk. Teachers have been trained on how to safely secure classrooms and coach students through this process. Helpful reminders in the event of an emergency:
Your child may have questions for you this evening and we encourage you to talk with them about the drill. Please direct any questions or concerns to Michelle Williams at [email protected]. Wishing you well, SASC Administration |

School family! You rocked bringing in snack for the staff meeting yesterday. Way to go and thank you so much!
This week we are focused on being helpful. We read Shubert's Helpful Day and talked about ways we can be helpful at school and at home. We also opened up our safe place this week. It is the new cool spot to check out in our classroom. Explorers have been given a chance to check it out and practice the safe place steps. I have included the steps in the "Helpful Handouts" tab above. Explorers may be interested in opening up a Safe Place at home. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about how to help them do that. |

Skills We Worked on This Week:
This week we explored the world of crafting! Today some Explorers enjoyed some watercolor time. We saw so many beautiful rainbows being painted. Earlier this week we worked on creating a fox to show off at our upcoming Open House. This required our first use of scissors. Explorers learned how to safely carry, pass, and use scissors! For some, using scissors is a brand new skill. We will be working on some fine motor skills to help make their scissor grasp stronger. Some fine motor activities you can try at home:
This week we also start keeping an eye out for kindnesses. We are putting kindness coins in a jar, counting them, and graphing them daily!
You may also see "kindness leaves" from our "kindness tree" coming home. When someone notices a kindness they are able to write a leaf to celebrate some one. The leaves read as follows: _______, You______________ so that______________. That was_________. Example: Mary, You tucked in extra chairs so that we could walk in our classroom safely. That was helpful. We are focusing on kindness because what we focus on we get more of and we always want more kindness in our day. Phoenix Folders Keep sending in those Friends and Family pages! Our book is filling up with beautiful faces. Coming home today is the Leon County School District Student Residency Questionnaire. Please fill it out and return it. If you have any questions reach out to Becca at [email protected] We are looking for volunteers to tear out and staple math worksheets. This is an opportunity for parents that work at day but are able to complete a task at home. It is a very big job and any help you can give would be greatly appreciated! We would likely need a few people willing yo do this job. Please email Ms. Erica if you are interested. Check out the book we are reading in class this week: Shubert's Helpful Day. ----------------------------------------------------> |

We are still looking for information. We have had 12 out of 25 families fill out the online Google doc that will act as a quick reference sheet for teachers and provide information for the classroom directory. You can also opt out of the classroom directory on the document. If you have not already please stop by and answer a few helpful questions. https://tinyurl.com/ExplorerSASC
What we are working on in class The first six weeks in our class is focused on creating a school family so when academics are introduced students have practiced positive interactions and they have developed some problem solving skills. The Helpful Explorers are continuing to make growth in building school family connections and learning procedures. This week we are learning how to be helpful in our school family, about center rotations, and practiced pair up and having Turn and Talk Time. Commitment this Week This week Explorers committed to following the volume lights. We focus a lot of time of practicing different volumes so that when we get to teaching reading, math, and a writing in smaller groups others can focus on their task with a sound level that is helpful to all. We do not want our class to be quiet all day long. That's no fun! We practice Volume Zero- no voice only helpful sign language, Volume One- whisper voice, Volume Two- normal talking voice. Typically we refer to anything above a Volume Two as an outside volume. Popular time for each volume: Lunch- "Chew Time" 5 mins- Zero to get food in bellies Lunch- "Talk Time" 25 mins- Two to socialize and connect while eating Centers- Zero and One- in the future reading will be taught at this time so we need to have low volume for focus. Rug time- Varies per activity Zero, One, and Two Helpful Reminders: Put your Explorer's name on all personal items including but not limited to sweaters and water bottles. We have some matching water bottles already. Our classroom can feel cold sometimes. Some Explorers may request to bring a sweater to school even in the 90 degree summer heat. Things to Practice at Home Kindergarten: Writing their name. S.T.A.R. breathing- Challenge your Explorer and see if they can show you the drain, the balloon, and the pretzel breathings too. |
Homework!
That's right is it the first homework assignment of the year and it is something to be excited about! You and your Explorer can work together to create a unique scrapbook page for our Friends and Family Book. We have provided a piece of card stock in your Explorer's Phoenix Folder for you to decorate and have your Explorer make their own. We ask that you try and keep the page as 2D as possible so it can fit into a page protector in our book. Please do not send any photos that are priceless to you. Sometimes oops happen and photos are not sent home in the same condition that they were sent to school in. These photos will be used to remind your child of how loved they are and how many people are there to support them. Photos can be of family members, pet, vacations, or something personal that brings a smile to your child. Please send the page back in as soon as you have it complete so we can get our book into our safe place. First Set of Drills
In case you missed the announcement, we had a fire drill and lock down drill this afternoon. Our focus during drills is safety, calm, and that these are just practice. We practice a lot of breathing and remind our Explorers that it is always our #1 job to keep each of them safe. The Explorers rocked all the drills! Lunch Schedule

This week we are focusing on getting to know our school family, conscious breathing to calm big feelings, and most importantly, safety. We say "we are your safekeepers and it is our job to keep you safe" and "as part of the school family it is your job to help keep it safe." We have learned all about S.T.A.R. breathing. To learn more about our practice of Conscious Discipline visit the website at consciousdiscipline.com. We hope that all the Explorers shared their S.T.A.R. wands with you and taught you how to be a S.T.A.R.. We practice: Smile Take a deep breath And Relax We have included a link to a Shubert book, the Conscious Discipline mascot, in a story about being a S.T.A.R. Next week we will be sending home our first homework assignment. This will be a blank piece of card stock for you and your Explorer to decorate. We ask that you add photos to this page to create a unique friends and family page for your Explorer.
